Italy recorded a trade surplus of €7.9 billion in July 2025, an improvement from the €6.8 billion surplus in the same month the previous year, surpassing the forecasted €5.5 billion. This growth was attributed to exports increasing at a faster rate than imports. Specifically, exports surged by 7.3% year-over-year, reaching €61.6 billion. This growth was bolstered by a notable rise in sales to non-EU countries (+9.9%) and EU countries (+4.8%). Significant export increases were observed in transportation equipment excluding motor vehicles (+45.6%), pharmaceuticals (+28.5%), base metals (+7.0%), and the food, beverages & tobacco sector (+6.1%). Regarding export destinations, shipments saw a substantial rise to the United States (+24.1%), ASEAN countries (+37.4%), Spain (+13.8%), the United Kingdom (+9.0%), France (+4.7%), Switzerland (+9.5%), and Poland (+12.5%). Conversely, there were declines in exports to the Netherlands (-7.8%), China (-4.0%), and Turkey (-2.5%). On the import side, there was a 6.1% increase, with significant growth in purchases from non-EU countries at 13.1%, compared to a modest 0.8% from EU countries. During the January to July 2025 period, exports grew by 2.9%, while imports rose by 4.8%, resulting in a reduced trade surplus of €30.7 billion compared to €36.0 billion for the same period last year.
