Average hourly earnings for all employees on US private nonfarm payrolls rose by 5 cents, or 0.1%, to $37.81 in September 2026, following a 0.3% increase in August and coming in below market expectations of a 0.3% gain. In September, average hourly earnings for private-sector production and nonsupervisory employees increased by 7 cents, or 0.2%, to $32.60. On a year-over-year basis, average hourly earnings were up 3% in September, the smallest annual increase since May 2021, after a 3.1% rise in August and below the anticipated 3.2% advance.
