2026.08.0612:30:00UTC+00U.S. Q2 Unit Labor Costs Ease to 1.3%, Extending Disinflationary Signal for 2026

Unit labor cost growth in the United States slowed in the second quarter of 2026, adding to signs of easing wage-driven inflation pressures. According to updated figures released on 6 August 2026, unit labor costs rose 1.3% quarter-over-quarter, down from a 1.8% increase in the first quarter of 2026.

The data, which compare each quarter’s change with that of the prior quarter, indicate a moderation in the pace at which labor compensation is feeding into overall production costs. In the first quarter, the 1.8% gain had already marked the change relative to the previous quarter, but the latest move to 1.3% suggests cost pressures from wages and benefits are decelerating as the year progresses.

For markets and policymakers, the softer Q2 reading may be interpreted as a constructive development for the broader inflation outlook. While unit labor costs are still rising, the slower growth rate reduces the risk of persistent cost-push inflation, potentially giving monetary authorities slightly more room to balance inflation control against growth considerations in the second half of 2026.
