Brazil’s industrial output declined by 0.6% in August 2026 compared with July, offsetting the 0.1% rise recorded in the previous month. The contraction was broad-based: all four major use-based categories and 16 of the 25 industrial sectors surveyed registered decreases.

By category, the sharpest drops were in semi- and non-durable consumer goods (-1.7%) and durable consumer goods (-1.0%), followed by capital goods (-0.6%) and intermediate goods (-0.2%).

Among specific activities, the largest negative contributions came from tobacco products (-23.4%), pharmaceutical and pharmaceutical chemical products (-5.5%), and extractive industries (-0.7%). Of the nine activities that expanded, food products (1.0%) exerted the strongest positive influence.

On a year-over-year basis, industrial production fell 1.2%, while output for the year to date remained up 0.8%.
